Spring Cleanup: What Should Actually Happen (and What to Skip)

Spring cleanup is the foundation of a great-looking yard all season — but a lot of “spring cleanup” advice has you doing the wrong things at the wrong time. Here’s what should actually happen on a Hudson Valley property, and what’s better to skip.

What Should Actually Happen

  • Clear winter debris — fallen branches, matted leaves, and litter that smother new growth and invite disease
  • Cut back perennials and grasses left standing over winter, before new shoots get tall
  • Edge and refresh beds, then add a 2–3 inch layer of mulch to hold moisture and block weeds
  • Prune the right plants — summer-blooming shrubs and dead/damaged wood now; save spring bloomers until after they flower
  • Inspect hardscapes for frost-heaved pavers or drainage issues that showed up over winter
  • First mow a touch high with a sharp blade once the lawn is actively growing and dry enough

What to Skip (or Hold Off On)

  • Raking or working soggy ground — walking on and raking wet, soft soil compacts it and tears new grass. Wait until it dries.
  • Scalping the lawn — cutting too short stresses the grass and hands weeds an open invitation
  • Over-pruning — hacking everything back hard removes the season’s flowers and stresses plants
  • Heavy fertilizer too early — feeding before the grass is actively growing mostly feeds weeds
  • Piling mulch against trunks — “mulch volcanoes” trap moisture and rot the base

Timing Is Everything in the Hudson Valley

The single biggest mistake is starting too early while the ground is still wet and cold. Let the soil firm up and the grass wake up before you do the heavy work. A week or two of patience protects your lawn and beds far better than an eager early start.
